App chooser

Which voice-controlled iPhone game should you pick?

Start with what you want your voice to do: change a note, make a louder sound, sing through a puzzle or say the answer. These choices lead to different games.

For a short humming game: start with Vocal Glide. For a vocal puzzle adventure: consider One Hand Clapping. For soft/loud platforming: look at Scream Go Hero. If you want a singing course or spoken-word puzzles, choose for that different goal.

Choose the controller before the app

Pitch control follows how high or low a note is. Volume control follows how loud a sound is. Speech recognition looks for words. A hum can work for a pitch game, but it cannot supply the word a spoken-answer puzzle expects.

The shortlist below compares documented activities in apps available for iPhone. It is a starting point for choosing a format, not a ranking from hands-on testing. We make Vocal Glide and Mumble Aloud; the alternatives are included because they serve different, sometimes overlapping, reasons to use your voice.

Vocal Glide: choose a small pitch-controlled experience

Vocal Glide’s five modes give a comfortable hum different jobs: steer a fairy in Moonlit Cave, move a hat in Magic Bunny, bloom flowers in Note Garden, aim a spell in Butterfly Meadow or paint a sky in Free Glide. Voice Setup establishes a comfortable range. Sessions can last one to five minutes, or you can choose Endless play.

Note Garden has no score or failure, making it a specific option for unhurried note matching. The collection is not a song library or a complete singing course. It offers a deliberately started 14-day trial and a separate lifetime unlock, with no subscription or automatic trial charge.

One Hand Clapping: choose a vocal puzzle adventure

One Hand Clapping uses singing and humming in a 2D puzzle-platforming world. Its developer describes puzzles involving melody, rhythm and harmony, with an encouraging approach to mistakes. It is a close alternative when you want your voice to help you progress through an adventure.

Choose by format: a connected vocal journey or a selection of short experiences. Both use illustrated worlds and voice input, so those alone do not distinguish them. Read Vocal Glide vs One Hand Clapping for that choice.

Scream Go Hero: choose volume as the challenge

Scream Go Hero’s advertised soft-voice walking and louder jumping put volume at the centre of platforming. Consider it if that is the action you want to try. It is a different brief from learning to steer through changes in pitch.

Think about the space you will play in and the sound you are comfortable making. We have not measured microphone thresholds or performance in background noise. Our Scream Go Hero comparison explains the input difference.

Voice Games: choose several arcade pitch activities

DevExtras’ Voice Games lists pitch-controlled mini-games such as Snake, Maze, Match Pitch and Alien Raiders. It belongs on a shortlist for someone who wants several arcade formats controlled by voice. A multi-game collection is therefore not unique to Vocal Glide.

Its listing describes advertising after games rather than during them. Check the current app for its access terms and the particular mini-games you want. We have not tested how its controls compare with Vocal Glide’s Voice Setup or its illustrated modes.

Yousician: choose singing games within a programme

Yousician includes Note Catcher and Chase the Notes alongside its singing lessons and songs. Note Catcher uses sung reference notes to move a paddle and collect gems. If you want a game to sit inside a continuing singing routine, that structure may matter more than a standalone game collection.

Check the available singing arrangements and membership needed for a song you want. See Vocal Glide vs Yousician for the difference between note play and a wider course.

Mumble Aloud: choose spoken answers instead of pitch

Mumble Aloud asks you to count, remember a picture, identify a sound source or connect pictures, then speak an answer. Its current release supports English, Czech and Italian answers, with English menus. It is free with no in-app purchases.

This is a word-recall game rather than a humming controller. Apple’s speech services recognise the answers, and fully offline speech is not guaranteed on every device and language. For Czech practice specifically, use our Czech speaking-app chooser.

Can you play without singing a song?

Yes. Vocal Glide accepts humming and does not require lyrics. One Hand Clapping also explicitly supports humming. A speaking game needs words instead; a volume game asks for changes in loudness. If you would rather make no voice input at all, consider listening and ear-training games.

For family turns, let each player follow the chosen app’s voice setup and finish their turn before others speak. Check the current age rating, device requirements and access terms in your regional store. “Uses a microphone” does not tell you how an app handles audio; consult each app’s own privacy information.

Sources and perspective

Exricel Studios makes Vocal Glide and Mumble Aloud. We compared documented features in the current public releases and official developer sources, checked on 9 September 2026.
